52nd District Court Judge-Presiding Judge

Judge David LawJudge David Law was appointed to the 52-1 District Court bench in February 2015 and overwhelmingly retained his seat in the November 2016 election.

Judge Law is a proud graduate of Novi-Detroit Catholic Central (1987). He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with a concentration in finance, from The University of Notre Dame (1991) and his Juris Doctor degree from the Detroit College of Law (1995).

Judge Law's legal career includes work in private practice for the firm Sills, Law, Essad, Fielder, and Charboneau, P.C., where he specialized in family law and civil practice (1995-1998). He then served as an Assistant Oakland County Prosecutor, working extensively in Oakland County district and circuit courts (1998-2004). Judge Law worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the Michigan Department of the Attorney General (2009-2015), where he represented the Michigan Department of Human Services, trying cases of child abuse and neglect. Judge Law previously served two terms as State Representative, representing the communities of Commerce Township and Wolverine Lake (2005-2008).

In 2019, Judge Law worked with fellow 52-1 District Judge, Travis Reeds, to create and implement a "cutting edge" court educational program for students focused on MIP and Vaping offenses. The goal of the program is to educate about the dangers of these behaviors, hopefully reducing recidivism and potentially saving lives . He is a member of the Michigan District Judges Association (MDJA), and he serves on legislative committees for the MDJA as well as the Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals (MATCP). Judge Law handles 52-1 District Court Sobriety Court and Drug Court dockets on top of his regular caseload. He was appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court on January 1, 2017 to serve as a member of the Committee on Model Criminal Jury Instructions for the State of Michigan. He is also a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Oakland County Bar Association and the Oakland County District Judges Association (OCDJA), serving as President of the OCDJA in 2018. He served as Chairman of the Oakland County Bar Association's District Court Bench/Bar Conference in 2018. He is a member of Novi Rotary and was selected to be Chairman of the Rotary Charity Golf Outing both in 2020 and 2021. Novi Rotary presented him with the Paul Harris Fellow Award 2021. Judge Law serves on the board of directors for Novi Youth Assistance (NYA), Lakes Area Youth Assistance (LAYA) and is an advisory board member for the south west Oakland County chapter of Families Against Narcotics (FAN). He is a founding member of the Commerce Township and 52-1 District Court Domestic Violence High Risk Response Teams. He is a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #128 (Wixom), Multi-Lakes Conservation Association (Commerce Township), the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers (ISIAL), Polish American Legal Society (PALS) and St. William Catholic Church (Walled Lake).

In 2021, Judge Law received a "Domestic Violence Prevention Award" from the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence for his handling of domestic violence cases in his court.
