Enforcement of the Michigan State Dog Law is key to happy and healthy pets within our community. The Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center patrols 47 municipalities with 10 full-time and 1 part-time Animal Control Officers. Enforcing the Michigan State Dog Law, the road unit handles over 5,000 calls per year.

Tips to Help Find Your Lost Pet

Lost your pet? Search your neighborhood. Look on local Shelter websites. Visit the Oakland County Pet Adoption Center to view the strays. Check with a local Michigan Humane Society location. They may have your pet. Stop in every few days to check new intakes. Descriptions of the same animal can vary from person to person. Don't rely on a phone call to identify your pet. Remember, the more effort made, the greater chance of finding your pet.

Prevent your pet from getting lost. Keep your cats indoors at all times with a safety collar and ID tags. License your dogs, fit them with an ID, and leash them when outdoors. Microchips are helpful to ensure your pet's safe return home.

How to File a Complaint

Please contact us and talk to staff about your complaint. They will advise and send an officer if needed. If there is an animal emergency—an animal attacking a person or a pet that is in immediate danger, please call 911.
Please have the address where the offense has occurred. An officer needs to make sure they are the right home or location.
